Which browsers are supported?

Google Chrome for desktop works on all operating systems. Microsoft Edge works on Windows, but not on macOS. The extension relies on the browser's built-in speech recognition, which only works reliably in these browsers.

Brave, Opera and Vivaldi are not supported. They are based on Chromium, but speech recognition doesn't work in them.

Microphone access denied

The extension needs your microphone to hear you. If you declined access, you can turn it back on:

  1. On gemini.google.com, click the site settings icon at the left of the address bar.
  2. Turn on Microphone.
  3. Reload the page.

If it still doesn't work, check that your microphone is plugged in, switched on and not muted, and that it's the one selected in your Windows or macOS sound settings.

No sound from the microphone

The browser is listening but isn't getting any sound. Check that the right microphone is selected in your system settings and that it isn't muted. A better microphone position can help too. See the best microphone setup for voice dictation.

Speech recognition not supported in this browser

This message has two common causes. Either the browser doesn't support speech recognition (see supported browsers), or it couldn't reach its speech service.

If you're using Chrome, or Edge on Windows, check your internet connection and whether a firewall or network filter blocks the traffic. Using a VPN sometimes helps.

Few voices, or a voice I don't like

Replies can be read by a voice on your device (Browser voice) or by Gemini's own voice. Choose between them under Playback voice in the Voice Control menu's More settings.

Browser voices come from your operating system and browser. If you only see a few, or none for your language, you can install more voices. In the language list, languages without a voice on your device can only be read by Gemini's voice.

I don't hear anything when a reply is read aloud

First check that your sound is on and the right output device is selected. Restarting the computer often fixes a stuck text-to-speech engine.

If the problem is with Browser voice, try Gemini voice under Playback voice, or install voices for your language.

Holding Space doesn't start talking

Hold to talk only works when you're not typing in a text field, so that Space still types a space in the prompt box. Click somewhere outside the prompt box first, then hold Space.

Keyboard shortcuts don't work

Another app or browser extension may be using the same shortcut. Close other apps, or restart the computer, and try again.

I see errors in the chat

Errors inside the conversation come from Gemini, not from the extension. Voice Control shows its own messages in a separate notice. If Gemini keeps showing errors, try again later.

The extension stopped working or looks wrong

This usually has one of two causes:

Something else isn't working

Saved settings can occasionally get into a bad state. You can reset the extension: click outside any text field on gemini.google.com and press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + B, then confirm.

Resetting also deletes your Dictionary. Export it first from the Dictionary in the Voice Control menu, and import it again afterwards.
